VFFS vs HFFS is one of the first decisions in any flexible-packaging project. Both machines make packs from a roll of film, fill them and seal them automatically. The difference is the direction the product travels, and that decides which products each one can handle well. This guide compares the two side by side and ends with five questions that tell you which to shortlist.
How each machine forms, fills and seals
VFFS: vertical form fill seal
A vertical form fill seal machine pulls film from a roll over a forming tube, which shapes it into a vertical tube. The long edge is sealed, the bottom is sealed, product drops in from above by gravity, and the top seal closes the pack and cuts it free. The next bag’s bottom seal is made in the same stroke, so the cycle repeats continuously.
HFFS: horizontal form fill seal
A horizontal form fill seal machine wraps film around products that travel horizontally on an infeed conveyor. The film is folded into a tube around each product, sealed along its length (a fin or lap seal) and sealed and cut at each end. This is the familiar flow wrap you see on biscuits and chocolate bars.
Product fit: the deciding factor in VFFS vs HFFS
The simplest rule: if your product flows or pours, start with VFFS. If it has a fixed shape and cannot be dropped, start with HFFS.
- VFFS suits: chips and snacks, nuts, rice and grains, sugar, powders and spices, coffee, frozen vegetables, pet food, and, with the right filler, liquids and sauces.
- HFFS suits: biscuits, bars, wafers, bakery items, noodle cakes, soap, trays, and non-food items such as medical devices, hardware parts and sponges.
Fragile items that would break if dropped belong on HFFS. Free-flowing products that are hard to place one by one belong on VFFS, where a weigher or filler above the machine doses them.
Bag styles each machine can make
A VFFS machine can make several styles, depending on its forming set and options:
- pillow bags, the most common and economical;
- gusseted bags, which hold more and stand better on a shelf;
- stick packs and 3-side seal pouches for single servings;
- quad seal bags and stand-up pouches (doy packs) for premium presentation.
An HFFS machine makes flow-wrap packs, sealed with a fin seal or a lap seal. It is one style, but it adapts to a wide range of product sizes and is fast to change between them.

Pairing each machine with a weigher or filler
A VFFS machine is only as accurate as the dosing system on top of it. Common pairings:
- Multihead weigher for snacks, nuts, frozen food and other pieces. It combines several weigh heads to get close to the target weight with little giveaway. See our multihead weigher packing machine.
- Auger filler for powders such as flour, milk powder and spices.
- Volumetric cup filler for uniform granules like sugar or rice.
- Liquid pump or piston filler for sauces and liquids.
An HFFS machine is paired with the way products arrive: an infeed conveyor, a feeder or a counter. Timing the product to the film is what gives a neat, consistent pack.
Either machine can carry a TTO printer to print dates and batch codes on the film, and both are usually followed by inspection such as a checkweigher and metal detector.
A five-question chooser
- Can the product be poured or dropped without damage? Yes: VFFS. No: HFFS.
- Is it sold by weight in loose form? (rice, snacks, powder) Yes: VFFS with a weigher or filler.
- Is each piece a unit you count? (a bar, a biscuit stack, a device) Yes: HFFS.
- Do you need a stand-up or gusseted bag? Yes: VFFS.
- Is floor length limited but height available? VFFS fits the space more easily.
Most products give a clear answer by question 3. If yours sits in between, such as small wrapped sweets that could be counted or weighed, test both ways with your product before deciding.
Frequently asked questions
Can one machine do both?
No. They are built on different principles. Some factories run both: VFFS for loose products and HFFS for bars or biscuits.
Which one is faster?
Both can be fast; speed depends on the model, the product and the pack. Welpack’s Hayssen Ultima SV VFFS runs up to 100 bags per minute, and actual speed varies with bag size and product.
Do they use the same film?
Both run heat-sealable films and laminates. The exact film depends on your product’s shelf-life and presentation needs, and should be tested on the machine.
Mistakes to avoid when choosing
- Choosing by speed alone. A fast machine that handles your product badly will run slower in practice than a well-matched one, because of jams, rejects and poor seals.
- Forgetting the dosing system. On a VFFS line, the weigher or filler decides accuracy and often limits speed. Choose the two together.
- Ignoring future packs. If you plan to add a stand-up pouch or a bigger bag next year, check now that the machine can take the forming set or options for it.
- Not testing your film. Film structure affects sealing temperature, speed and how the pack looks. Test on the machine with the film you will actually buy.
- Leaving out coding and inspection. A date coder on the film and a metal detector or checkweigher after the machine are part of the line. Plan space and controls for them from the start.
