How VFFS Works

How It’s Used

Products You Can Pack

Snacks & Chips

A vertical form fill seal machine is ideal for packing snacks such as chips, nuts, and crackers. It ensures consistent portioning and secure sealing to keep products fresh for retail distribution.

Rice & Grains

Rice, beans, and other grains can be packaged efficiently with automated vertical packaging systems. Strong seals help protect the product and reduce spillage during handling and transport.

Powders

Powdered products like spices, flour, and milk powder require accurate filling and clean packaging. A vertical form fill seal machine helps maintain consistent weight while minimizing product waste.

Liquids & Sauces

Liquids, sauces, and pastes can be packed using specialized filling systems integrated with the machine. This ensures hygienic filling and reliable sealing for consistent pouch packaging.

Frozen Food

Frozen vegetables, fruits, and seafood can be packed quickly and securely. Proper sealing helps maintain product quality and makes them suitable for cold storage and transportation.

VFFS vs HFFS: Which Machine Do You Need?

Both VFFS and HFFS (horizontal form fill seal) machines form bags from roll film, fill them, and seal them automatically.
The difference is the orientation and the product types they suit best.

VFFS

A VFFS machine forms bags vertically. Product drops down into the bag by gravity. This makes it ideal for free-flowing products like snacks, grains, powders, and liquids that can be dispensed from above. VFFS machines have a smaller floor footprint because the process runs vertically.

HFFS

An HFFS machine forms bags horizontally. Product is placed or pushed into the bag from the side. This suits solid, pre-formed items like biscuits, chocolate bars, soap bars, noodle cakes, and medical devices that cannot be dropped without breaking or shifting.

Quick Comparison:

VFFS is best for: chips, nuts, rice, powder, granules, liquids, sauces, frozen vegetables. Bag types: pillow bag, gusseted bag, stick pack, 3-side seal, doy pack. Filling method: gravity drop from above. Floor space: compact vertical footprint.

HFFS is best for: biscuits, bars, noodle cakes, soap, trays, medical items. Bag types: flow wrap (fin seal or lap seal). Filling method: product placed or pushed horizontally. Floor space: longer horizontal footprint.

If your product flows or pours, VFFS is typically the right choice. If your product has a fixed shape and cannot be dropped, HFFS is the better fit. Welpack supplies both VFFS and HFFS machines to cover the full range of primary packaging needs.

What is a VFFS machine?

A VFFS (vertical form fill seal) machine is an automated packaging system that forms bags from a roll of flat film, fills them with product, and seals them in one continuous vertical process. It is used across food, pharmaceutical, and industrial packaging.

What products can a VFFS machine pack?

Snacks, chips, rice, grains, powders, spices, coffee, frozen food, sauces, liquids, pet food, seeds, and small industrial materials. The bag style and dosing system are configured based on your product type.

What is the difference between VFFS and HFFS?

VFFS drops product vertically into bags and suits free-flowing items like powders, granules, and liquids. HFFS pushes product horizontally into flow-wrap bags and suits solid items like biscuits, bars, and trays.

How does the machine form the bag?

A roll of film is rolled into a tube and then it is closed along the edge and then filled with the product and again closed on the top and bottom.

How fast can a VFFS machine run?

Speed depends on the model and product. Welpack’s Hayssen Ultima SV produces up to 100 bags per minute. Actual speed varies based on bag size, product type, and filling accuracy requirements.

Is it compatible with various film materials?

Yes. It is compatible with the laminates, polyethylene film, and other materials that have the ability to be sealed using heat which is often used in food and industrial packaging.

What bag styles can a VFFS machine produce?

Pillow bags, gusseted bags, stick packs, 3-side seal pouches, doy packs (stand-up pouches), and quad seal bags. The bag style is selected based on your product and retail presentation needs.
